Quang Tri ancient citadel is located in Quang Tri town, about 2km north of National Highway 1A. The architecture of the citadel has many unique features, bringing the standard of a military citadel with a total circumference of about 2,080m, the wall is 4.29m high. According to historical records, Quang Tri ancient citadel was built during the reign of King Gia Long and was rebuilt with new bricks around 1837 under King Minh Mang.

The ancient citadel was built with the purpose of serving as a military citadel as well as an administrative headquarters for the Nguyen dynasty.
